Some designs don’t need changing – here's a longboard that'd be instantly familiar to a surfer from the 1960s, albeit with one or two contemporary tweaks. Handcrafted in Cornwall, the Kayu is based on a shape the crew at Maluku have been tuning and adapting for the last 20 years.

The mid to low entry rocker gives this board heaps of paddle power and glide, getting it into waves early and easily, while the lift in the tail improves manoeuvrability. A single concave runs through the nose, perfect for noseriding, before a slight roll or belly takes over in the mid section for a real old-school feel. This then transitions into a double before “veeing” out the tail.

What you’re getting here is a classic single-fin longboard, designed for cruising, noseriding, and drawing timeless soulful lines. You can still lay into turns, but if you wanna do tailslides and chop hops on your 9’6, you best look elsewhere. An excellent high-volume log that catches loads of waves when it’s small and is happy to slide into a few chunkier faces when the swell picks up, the Kayu can be surfed from the middle, the nose or the tail.
