To quote shaper Clayton Nienaber, the Havoc was “the start of the whole Spine-Tek thing.”

Shapers Australia, who own the tech, had a “funny composite […] lying around”, and they suggested that Clayton, who’d been experimenting with different constructions, give it a go. He was bored with standard PU construction, and found stringer-less EPS boards too wobbly. But when he tried one with this new composite running down the middle, he told us, “straight away it was one of the best boards I’ve had in years”.

Well that was the Havoc, and it’s the model on which the rest of the Clayton range is based. It’s an all-round high-performance shortboard, designed to go in a wide range of conditions and featuring a few key user-friendly tweaks.

Compared to his standard high-performance thruster there’s a bit more width in the plan shape, which should facilitate smoother rail turns; and the rails are fuller, more forgiving, allowing a slightly wider margin for error. The tail is wider, too, so that “when you push down you displace more water, and you get more drive”. (Nienaber is also a high-level surf coach, and a true technician.) Meanwhile he took an 1/8 of an inch off the tail rocker and 1/4 an inch off the nose rocker, partly to allow for the extra flex.

Features:

  • Construction: Spine-Tek (EPS/Epoxy + composite spine)
  • Fin Systems: Futures
  • Fin Set-Up: Thruster
  • Rocker: Moderate
  • Concave: Single to double
  • Rails: Full and forgiving
  • Tail: Squash
  • Skill Level: Intermediate and above
  • Ideal Conditions: 2-6ft

Nowadays Clayton, a legit shredder in his own right, won’t ride anything other than Spine-Tek. When he gets back on a PU, he says, it’s “like being on a trampoline and when you jump off you hit solid ground again […]. They don’t feel alive, they feel terrible.” Shapers Australia, for their part, say it “enhances the overall responsiveness of your surfboard, injecting it with kinetic energy that transforms into additional speed, power and flow.” As for Channel Islands, their team riders liked it so much that they bought the license for it, which they now share exclusively with Clayton Surfboards.
