Sharp Eye Holy Toledo HT2.5 Thruster FCS II Surfboard
- Colour: White
There’s something about the look and feel of it that’s almost reminiscent of a race car, and this is probably no coincidence – Zouvi guards his design secrets closely, and when we last spoke to him he compared shaping to Formula 1 engineering. What’s more, this board’s built for speed.
“Make it go faster” was Filipe’s only instruction, and that’s the purpose of the distinctive tail design, the most noticeable change from the HT2. The 2.5 has a cute little swallow tail with a channel starting in line with the rear fin and running through the swallow’s two points – the result is extra squirt off the back foot. Toledo loved it.
But then Toledo’s a freak, probably the best surfer in the world in waves 6ft and under, the range that this board is built for. Is this a suitable craft for someone who’s not lightening-quick from rail to rail, not in quite such pristine physical shape, not necessarily looking to boost an air reverse on every oncoming section?
It’s a fair question, and we asked it. Marcio Zouvi told us the HTs are intermediate-friendly, and all the evidence so far bears this out. This board actually has a decent amount of volume – nearly 28 litres for the 5’10 – and the boxy rails are relatively forgiving in smaller surf. Feedback so far is highly promising.
Superstar board-reviewer “Longtom”, writing on the famously impartial BeachGrit, was surprised that he “did not find [it] difficult to ride”, and concluded that there was “something in this for the 99 per center.” He was a big fan, particularly of the swallow tail and channel combo: “Zouvi claims they give speed, bite and drive and despite wanting to rebel against the vagueness of those terms that is the case. Something special happens when you lay this board into a tight turn.”
This isn’t a high-performance groveller or smaller-wave specialist (if you’re after one of those, go for the Disco, which is also more user-friendly), and nor is it designed specifically with perfect waves in mind (that would be the #77, which we’ve got too) – this board’s more versatile than that. We’d recommend it to any surfer who's in the solid intermediate range and upwards, and looking to do the best surfing of his or her life.
